I was inspired by the concept art of the Game Natural selection2. I blocked the environment out in 3ds max and set up a basic light to see which parts required the most work. Because I did not want to spend too much time on objects that were not lighted. I made parts close to the camera high poly to achieve good detail. Once modeling was finished, I laid out the UV's and painted grungy metal. After the texture was done, I set key lights near the control panels and put more spot lights to help the mood. Mental ray was used for rendering. I composited with ambient occlusion and a depth of field map. In total, it took 3 months.
